This backyard was originally not very usable due to a significant slope from the house to the back property line. The client envisioned a spa, swimming pool, and multiple lounging and dining spaces, so we designed the layout to work with the grade rather than against it. By raising the concrete shell of the pool out of the ground, we created a 36-inch-high rear wall, an ideal height for incorporating bar seating behind the pool.
At one end, a raised spa overflows into the pool, adding both a relaxing sensory experience and a dramatic visual focal point. Above the fire pit lounge, a sleek, modern stainless steel and ipe wood pergola provides a sense of enclosure and privacy from neighbours. It also softens the architecture by acting as a lattice for wisteria to climb and bloom.
With multiple seating zones, a built-in outdoor kitchen, and a cabana complete with a powder room, this transformed backyard has become a luxurious, highly functional space—perfect for entertaining throughout the hot Toronto summers.
